The Inside Scoop on Dermal Fillers

by | Jul 8, 2021

By Olivia Brancato, BSN, RN

Anti-aging treatments, including dermal fillers and Botox, seem to be everywhere now, and used by people of all ages and both men and women. The world of fillers has expanded recently, with new and more advanced products available to target specific areas. Pair that with an experienced injector and your results will be natural and youthful looking, keeping your friends and family guessing as to how you seem not to be aging.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a soft gel-like substance that is injected under the skin to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and give structure to areas that may be lacking. Common areas filler can be used are cheeks, lips, smile lines (nasolabial folds) and frown lines (marionette lines), chin, jaw, under eyes, and temples.

Although they can be made from various substances, the most common types of fillers (and my personal favorites) are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that is naturally found in the body. It enhances collagen production and helps bring water to the injected area and create a plump appearance.

Skill Really Does Matter!

One size does not fit all when it comes to dermal fillers and the different areas of your face! It is essential to use the right type of filler in each area of the face, which we at Fresh Pearl MedSpa will explain thoroughly during the consultation portion of your appointment. We pride ourselves in providing you with personalized advice and education for your peace of mind.

Each area of the face must be treated with the correct density of filler in order to achieve natural-looking results:

  • Cheeks need a more dense filler, such as Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft, that will hold its structure and provide lift and support to the upper face.
  • By contrast, the frequent movement and use of the lips requires a softer filler, such as Juvederm Ultra or Restylane Kysse, that will allow them to stay soft and pillowy while still adding volume.

Let’s also mention the potential downside of fillers. As with any procedure, complications and side effects can sometimes occur such as swelling, redness, and bruising to the injected area. Typically lasting less than 2 weeks after the procedure, ice and arnica tablets can help reduce any side effects. It is important to keep the lines of communication open with your injector. Here at Fresh Pearl MedSpa, we invite our clients come to us with any concerns. As you can see, there is a lot to think about when it comes to dermal fillers.
